Specificity

SCRIPTURE:  Bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure—you, the righteous God who probes minds and hearts. Psalm 7:9 NIV

THOUGHT: David, the shepherd-boy, musician, songwriter and king, never seemed to suffer from over-generalization…but I wonder about you and I. His songs and prayers are full of pleas for God to bring justice upon the wicked, expose their plans, and return their violence and evil on their own heads like a boomerang.

The promise here is that God knows every intent of the human heart. Not only does he have the corner on truth about what is hidden, he has the right to judge, and the tools to avenge wrong-doing, keeping the righteous secure from the violence around them. It’s a heady promise, and frankly, we have no idea of how often God has done this very thing for us throughout our lifetime, but it still seems wise to take a cue from David, whom God loved, and pray with specificity.

PRAYER: Oh righteous God who probes minds and hearts, bring an end to the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure.
