SCRIPTURE: Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
THOUGHT: Anybody else been stress eating? It’s not enough that suddenly I’m cooking what feels like all the time, I’m also snacking between meals, eating desserts almost every evening, and just reaching for something good to take my mind off everything else.
The Bible actually says a lot about eating, and food was involved in the greatest temptations recorded there: Adam and Eve surrounded with food, but longing for the fruit God has asked them not to touch; Israel’s temptation to whine and complain both before and after God delivers food from heaven; and Jesus, tempted in the wilderness to turn a rock to bread. Jesus, being wise and perfect, says you can’t live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God (Mt. 4:4).
On the one hand, the psalmist encourages us to taste God, to surround ourselves with — find refuge in — him. On the other, after fasting 40 days, Jesus says we should nourish ourselves with God’s words, not just bread. Today, when I’m longing for comfort, I’d like to taste God, to feed on his words and find out more about how good he is.

PRAYER: God, your word says we’ll be blessed when we find refuge in you, not our ways of coping without you. Help us taste these truths and see that you are good!

Nice song. Really liked it. 🙂
