Never is a Long Time

SCRIPTURE: God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? Hebrews 13:5-6 NIV

THOUGHT: Never is a long time.

We don’t really have a frame of reference for it, and in our casualness with language often throw it around like another big word, love. “I love ice cream,” we say, or “I love the Spartans.” In the same manner, never gets overused: “we’ll never get there!” Or “You never put away your things!” (Or, “I’ll never love the Spartans!”) In most conversations, never is just a way of amplifying the verb.

God is not so casual with never. To him, it is an eternal truth, a promise he must (and will) keep, binding him to us forever. Our reason for confidence, the very foundation of our faith, is built on an eternal promise. You know, people can never leave and still forsake you – people can stay and make your life miserable, but God doubled up on his promise, just in case we ever wondered: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” We can rely on both.

Because God cannot lie (Titus 1:2), we can build on his presence with assurance. Whatever mere mortals say or do cannot trump what God has promised, so go your way today unafraid, the helper is with you.

PRAYER: Oh God of truth, give us eyes and hearts and minds to trust you fully when you say, “never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Each moment we are tempted to forget your promises, remind us again.
