SCRIPTURE: But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’ 1 Samuel 10:19 NIV
QUOTE: “We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition, Revenge or Gallantry would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net.”
– John Adams, 2nd President, United States of America
THOUGHT: Unbridled human passions (Gal. 5:19-21). Lack of moral fiber (James 1:21). Lack of the knowledge of God (Rom. 1:28). The perfect storm. The trifecta of broken nations and broken people.
We read throughout Scripture about the mistakes Israel made and the sin in which they found themselves entangled. First the nation would rise under a wise leader who loved God, then would come the fall – over and over, ad nauseum. On some level it all started with rejecting God as king. God wanted to be king (and still does), but his own people, his prize, the apple of his eye, rejected him.
John Adams knew this as he fought for the Declaration of Independence and helped structure a new government. He knew that if self-government (based on moral and religious virtue) broke down, the entire system he was fighting for would break down too. Like a whale through a net, if people stopped loving God and loving his law for human flourishing, brokenness would result.
I look around sometimes and see broken nets, and people without virtue or faith celebrating their breaking. They simply have no idea what that means.
PRAYER: Oh God, we see the brokenness coming, as big and powerful as a whale in a net that cannot contain it. You have always been our hope; you are our hope now. We say you are our king, and we pray your will over our nation and all creation.

Hey Amy, I read this as an interruption from writing this morning. I’m off from work this week and wanted to reignite some writing but all that is coming out is disappointment. The only bright spot lately is the Roe reversal, but you wouldn’t know by the way the media is portraying it. Anyway, finding God again is the only way through this dishevelment. It’s insanity on steroids. God only knows the way through. Lord have mercy. Thanks for this.
