The Gift of Mystery

Read: Isaiah 55
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (vv. 8-9)

Comedian Mark Lowry tapped into his serious side when he penned “Mary, Did You Know?” An exploration of God’s mysterious plan to save the world, the song asks Jesus’ mother, Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new? / This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you.

While Lowry may have questions for Mary, I’d like permission to go straight to the throne room and talk with our heavenly Father about his great creative genius. Where does he come up with his unfathomable ways? And his thoughts! “Your thoughts, how rare, how beautiful! God, I’ll never comprehend them!” writes the psalmist. “I couldn’t even begin to count them, any more than I could count the sand of the sea” (Ps. 139:17-18 Message).

The gift of mystery at Advent is a renewed awe of the triune God. Each year, we get another chance to ponder his mysterious way of coming to live among us as a vulnerable baby, dependent on parents, angel messengers, and Magi to sustain his early life. A child Mary delivered, who in God’s great turnaround, was needed to deliver her, and us.

Prayer: Giver of good gifts, thank you for mystery. It is a reminder that you are God, and we are not. Help us find our rest in that truth, rather than stressing over the mysteries that remain.
