Revealed Things

SCRIPTURE:  The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV

THOUGHT: In Deuteronomy 29, Moses is closing out his incredible ministry among the people God has delivered from slavery, fed and clothed in the wilderness for 40 long years, and shaped by his acts and his word.

Chapters 29-32 are especially poignant as you read them through this lens. Moses is pouring out everything God has taught him during the long journey from baby in a basket, to prince in Pharaoh’s palace, to hiding out in the wilderness, to confronting the powerful Pharaoh for release of the Hebrews from slavery, to leading them out as God performed miracle after miracle, and to this place – on the cusp of the land that would become home.

Moses has seen it all.

One of his big conclusions is that God still has secrets – but the things he has revealed are many, they belong to the people of God and their children forever, and they are enough if only the people of God will do all the words of this law.

Of course, we know the rest of the story. How that doesn’t happen, and how it breaks God’s heart, arouses him to jealousy, and eventually to judgement of his own people, the people who were supposed to represent him to the world.

Sounds eerily familiar, doesn’t it? Only for us, we don’t have to do the law, we have the law written on our hearts (Jer. 31:33) and the Holy Spirit of God living inside (Jn. 14:26).

So much revelation, if only we listen and follow.

PRAYER: Oh God, you have breathed inside us yet again. Fresh life, being renewed everyday; fresh water, welling up for any who thirst. Help us get still and listen, drink and eat what you have revealed, and live.
