Assault on the Family

SCRIPTURE:  Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 ESV

QUOTE: “What will be the influence of communist society on the family?

It will transform the relations between the sexes into a purely private matter which concerns only the persons involved and into which society has no occasion to intervene. It can do this since it does away with private property and educates children on a communal basis, and in this way removes the two bases of traditional marriage – the dependence rooted in private property, of the women on the man, and of the children on the parents. … The bourgeois [middle class] family will vanish as a matter of course when its complement vanishes, and both will vanish with the vanishing of capital.”

– Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, Manifesto of the Communist Party, 1847

THOUGHT: Recently, I heard the personal testimony of a Chinese immigrant to the U.S. She came of age during Mao’s Cultural Revolution, a political movement with the stated purpose of purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society. Resulting in as many as 47 million deaths and 20 million banishments, communist policies used the youth of the country to achieve “progress” by shutting down schools, destroying religious and cultural relics, and killing intellectuals and others believed to be anti-revolutionaries.

The eye-witness testimony of this woman included how she and her friends were groomed to radicalization partially by asexualization. Boys and girls were dressed alike in dowdy brown trousers and shirts; sometimes the heads of both were shaved. Beauty was dangerous, just like thinking for yourself was sedition. She said ultimately young men and women didn’t turn toward each other or their families, they turned toward the state – the only thing they had left.

In my humble opinion, the movement in our world (and in our own country) toward socialism and communism has everything to do with God, and with God’s plans for humanity. The redefinition of the family has been going on for a long time, but it is picking up steam. From the beginning of creation, God’s plan was that humans form families: a man and a woman committed to becoming one flesh, and the children, the small miracles, they bring into their circle. Governments that reject God’s plan in favor of trying to manipulate the definition of home and family, and male and female, are nothing more than mad scientists, playing fast and loose with God’s rule. The assault on the family has always and will always result in death, destruction, loss, grief, and the bastardization of the human race.

Yet this is the ideology that’s coming for us.

PRAYER: Oh God, the ideas about marriage, gender, and sexuality that overwhelm our public discourse are meant to distract us from the bigger lie that seeks to devour us: the lie that we don’t belong to a loving God who made us in his image, crowned us with glory and honor, and has good plans for human flourishing – better than we can even ask or imagine. Help us hold up the truth about human flourishing — your idea for good in this world.
