The Greatest Tragedy

SCRIPTURE:  The Lord stripped away the defenses of Judah, and you looked in that day to the weapons in the Palace of the Forest. You saw that the walls of the City of David were broken through in many places; you stored up water in the Lower Pool. You counted the buildings in Jerusalem and tore down houses to strengthen the wall. You built a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the Old Pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or have regard for the One who planned it long ago. Isaiah 22:8-11 ESV

THOUGHT: When I think about the greatest tragedy of humanity, I think of really just one word. Forgetfulness. Perhaps that seems overly simplistic to you. But it happened in Eden, it happened in Noah’s day, it happened before God called Abraham, it happened over and over to the nation God shaped from Abraham’s seed, and wouldn’t you say it’s happened throughout history and is, in fact, happening here in America today?

Over time, people forget God and begin to rely on their own resources.

In good seasons, they forget the God who opened doors. In hard seasons, they run for whatever protection they can find, often blaming God for a tragedy they have encountered. They look for weapons, they shore up walls, they store up for a siege. But meanwhile, the biggest tragedy is still unfolding – forgetfulness. God made it all, owns it all, loves what he made, cares for his own, and deserves our allegiance, our regard.

What he doesn’t deserve is to be forgotten.

PRAYER: Oh God, forgive me for even a moment of forgetfulness for what you have done. I ask for heaven’s perspective rather than my own.
