SCRIPTURE: The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. … In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Psalm 19:1-5 ESV
THOUGHT: As the days grow colder here in Tennessee, we still love to have our coffee and prayer out on the deck first thing. Watching the sky awaken with early light, typically a lot of beautiful reds and oranges that slowly disappear into that beautiful blue, is a treasure. When the first spot of sunshine hits us, I am amazed all over again at the immediate warmth it provides. I love David’s imagination of the sun like a bridegroom and a strong man running his course with joy. The sun is God’s handiwork and he does all things well.
Perhaps it seems overly simple to stop and enjoy a ray of sunshine, but we can also take such little things for granted, turning instead to lesser things that seem more pressing, like the morning news. But moments stolen from the rush of life are important. As the world has become increasing complicated and dark in the past few years, taking time to experience the little things has been like a lifeline. These are the things God set in motion with creation, and they give me a peak into the steadiness and stability of that world.
If sitting and appreciating the glory of God in the heavens, listening to the sky proclaim and pour out speech and reveal knowledge is somehow trivial, then I can be convicted of loving trivia, and hopefully you can too.
PRAYER: Oh God, let me see your glory in the little things.
