All Things New

SCRIPTURE:  And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5 ESV

THOUGHT: Honestly, making new things is the theme of God’s story. Think about it: In the beginning, God creates everything new from nothing, and in the end the trustworthy and true word of God is that he is making all things new again. Somewhere in the middle, we have the incredible privilege of becoming new creatures (2 Cor. 5:17) and watching the process of God’s creative power in our own lives – just a microcosm of what he is doing across all of time.

Creation from nothing (creatio ex nihilo) is God’s sacred territory, and it’s worth pausing to think about. No matter what man makes, it is out of something God created. The raw material of our world turns into skyscrapers, weather measuring instruments, semiconductors, contact lenses, diamond rings, and food on our table. A man and woman begat another man or woman and the circle of life God started continues. Perhaps we unpack a few more of God’s secrets, but creation from nothing – using only his word (The Word) – is a secret he retains.

If we can get to a place of amazement with God’s ways and character (for example, that he does all of this work without sin, another thing mankind is incapable of), the result is inevitable: worship, in spirit and truth.

PRAYER: Oh God, you are a miracle who does miracles. Lift my eyes up from the stuff of earth, the things you have made, to you, the maker of heaven and earth. Come and make all things new again.
