Little Lesson 5: God Opens Doors

SCRIPTURE:  I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. Revelation 3:8 NLT

THOUGHT: God knows everything, so he knows I am a bear (or ground hog?) of little brain at times. I try not to make the spiritual life overly complicated although I can also excel at that, sadly.

About 20 years ago, God began to deal with my double-mindedness and over-complexifying everything. I was a second-, and third-, and fourth-guesser. Making a decision seemed impossible as I swung from answer to answer, filled with the tension of ambivalence and gut-wrenching angst. I was, as James puts it, unstable in all my ways. By grace, God has delivered me from that. He taught me to trust him, to ask for his will, to listen for and trust the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and to lean on Jesus who is always praying for me. In short, I’ve seen him open doors and, rather than hesitate, I’ve walked through in faith. How rewarding it has been to rest from carrying all the weight of needing to be right and needing to be perfect, and needing to be in control. What an illusion it all was anyway. He knew I had little strength, but as I began to obey his voice and word, and love his presence rather than deny it, he began to open doors.

Not everyone struggles like this, but if you don’t, maybe you know someone who does and you could share this devotional with him/her. This is the path forward to peace that passes understanding, something Jesus paid for, but a gift wasted if we don’t rest in it.

SONG:

Any door you open
That’s the door I wanna walk thru
Any little portal
Where I can catch another glimpse of you
If I hear you calling
See you breaking through, and
There’s a way I couldn’t see before
That’s where I’ll be going
Thank you for holding open
Earth’s windows and heavens’ doors

PRAYER: Thank you Father for this beautiful promise. We might have little strength, but as we love and listen and trust and act faithfully, you open doors we never could.
